Green is the marriage capital of the world. It has been the popular
choice for many couples over the last 250 years. At Gretna Green, couples
can enjoy a romantic wedding performed over the anvil in a beautiful
scenic location.
The history of Gretna weddings is surrounded by romance. Located on
the old coaching route between London and Edinburgh, Gretna Green was
the first village reached once you entered Scotland. Young couples used
to elope 'over the border' to Gretna Green, where they could be married
at 16 years of age. English law did not allow them to marry until they
were 18 without their parents consent.
The Blacksmith's Anvil
In popular folklore, the local blacksmith and the his anvil have become
the lasting symbols of Gretna Green weddings.
As a "forger", the blacksmith marries hot metal to metal over
the anvil, in the same way the anvil priests forged a union between
couples who had eloped in love.
To this day the old wedding traditions are preserved and thousands of
couples travel from all over the world get married at Gretna Green.
